Update !!!

Ok. Have finaly managed to get X Windows to run on my Linux box. Would you believe, i had the GUI running and decided to be smart and select my MONITOR from a list of monitors when i was fine tuning resolution & refresh rates. It asked me to reboot, so i did. Once I did, that was it. I could only use the Command Line to do anything. After some hunting down on the web with MR Beki we were able to locate the configuration file (eg. etc/XF86Config-4) we needed to modify to get it running.

When we went to the relevant directory, we noticed another file with the same name but with an extension of '.old'. So we replaced the current config file with the old one and that did it.

By the way, the Linux box's host name is 'hellsmouth'. Anyone know where that is from and what theme I'll be following with my naming convention?

More to do. Shall report back later.

John, did you look at Slakware? It's the oldest Linux distribution, and it's not run by a company. In my books, that's a good thing after what happened with Red Hat. The support web page for Slakware is excellent. Very informative, and no bullshit pictures of happy people smiling, like you see on every company page these days. Just info, quick, easy to find. The distro itself has no commercial "pressures", so I've found they don't do broken releases just to satisfy some marketing requirements. It's also a distro for people who know what they are doing and want control of everything.

Anyway, you've made your choice so it's done. Mandrake is quite good I hear, but I would not use anything other than Slakware now.

Cheers,
Shem
