Melbourne by night

I've decided I might start a 'Melbourne by night' series and try and pop a few shots of our Most Liveable City in the World (2 years running). I've been around the world but this is the place to be.

The sub $40 plans all have HEAVY penalty costs if you go over the minimum volumes.. watch out for this ! Dont forget once you have ADSL things come down faster so therefore you tend to use more data because your 1 hour a day (or whatever) gets 5 - 10 times more then dial-up would..

ok.. nuff said.

Hi L,

I'm with iiNet as well. Damn good plans and VERY reliable. Gets great reviews at Whirlpool. iiNet have ADSL plans starting from $24.95 a month. Here's a link to see the packages:

L,

I just re-read your Post... about the cost, there is no mega cheap plan (like $20 a month or something) for Broadband connections. Tel$tra was going to release a $30 plan this month but were stopped because that would be unfair on competition (doh!).

My point is if you NEED the faster speeds for work :) then you have to pay for it. I would push to have your work pay for the ongoing costs or the setup costs (because it is work related)...

Setup is usually $70 - $100 to get connected and $130 - $150 for the special modem.

BTW I am with IINET cause they have the best plan for what I want, there are HEAPS of ISP's out there!

L (hiya - long time no chat)

There are 2 types of Broadband - ADLS (phone line) and Cable (Optus/Telstra - through your paytv cable lines). Cable is about 20% more expensive but considerably faster. ADSL is still faster then Dialup but more affordable. Note the ADSL does NOT limit your phone, i.e. you can be online 24x7 and still use your phone as normal.

Not ALL areas can have ADSL and not all have Cable, what you need to do is check your number to see if it works for ADSL (this usually depends on your distance to local phone exchange).

Anyway, take a look at the plans available - pay special attention to setup costs, volume (exceeding quota) charges and the overall speeds.

I would recommend a 256K standard unlimited plan - I think they start from $45 - $55 a month. A 256K connection is 5 - 7 times faster to use the dialup.

You need to buy a special ADSL Modem (either Phone line or Cable) because the old dial up modems work entirely different.

Go look here to find out more, especially try your phone number to see if you can get ADSL:

P.S. Feel free to contact me or jc for more info if you like :)

Good Luck,

J

Question for you as again I need help.

What do you suggest I hook up to(whatever) when wanting a high speed home line, basically I'd prefer unlimited upload/download but not the astronomical cost.

As I'll be working from home(one day a wk) and they require me to get this in case of large client logs.

Melbourne rocks. I could not agree more. The funny thing is, when I was in Vancouver, I remember saying to my wife... this is the only other city I've seen that compares to Melbourne, where I could see myself living. And... Vancouver came equal 1st with Melbourne this year. But I still see no reason to leave Melbourne.

John.... you should submit your photos to The Age. They have a section on Melbourne where readers submit their artistic photos of "my Melbourne". You'd be right up there! Just check The Age front page, right-hand side column.
